Chapter 4: Helsinki
Julkaistu 03.03.2013. - Networking
My internship took me to Helsinki and a little bit closer to Vaasa for the Fall semester. New friends, experiences and great new lessons.
So the last part of my summer internship was in Helsinki. As I came back I received instructions to meet my new boss Paola Suhonen in the area where the boats dock in Helsinki to go to Suomenlinna, a small island just across from Helsinki. As we went to the Island i chatted with the marketing manager and the models, we were gonna have a shoot for Ringi a new application for smart phones that was gonna feature Ivana Helsinki content. It was awesome to get there and as I wore my University of Vaasa Hoodie I realized that this was wayyyy too cool for a regular internship, I had indeed hit jackpot as a student of communication to be so close to the action.
Summer in Finland is indeed wonderfull, the weather is nice the long days are great to get things done. In Finland most students do internships during summer and as it is the best period to get one as many employees go on hollidays. In my case my internship allowed me to enjoy the city as well as to run all over, it was a little bit like being in NY but with a different backdrop. Finland can totally be hectic but it never gets to be too much, Helsinki is a nice capital and the cultural mix is great.
During this time in Helsinki I interacted with people from Finland, Denmark, Australia, England, USA and India. Fashion is without a doubt one of the most international areas to work in and the fact that Ivana Helsinki is involved in Film and production it gives it an edge and a greater scope of activities. I was very impressed also by the work ethic in the company, work, work, work... indeed it was a great enviroment, yes sometimes stressful or too busy but worth every second. I really like the way Finland and specially this company helped me realize that I can multitask more and seek my creative side while still pursuing my studies for the next year.
Indeed working in Helsinki was completely intercutural and eye openning on how much Finland was making waves outside. I got to help organize parties during the Fashion Film Festival, help set up an exposition at the Amos Anderson Museum and even meet legendary singer and composer Chip Taylor (Angelina Jolie's uncle to those clueless about rock/country music). If there was any summer where I networked and worked this hard it was this, well maybe the one in Disney World would come close but still that is another story.
