Communication Studies

Welcome to Communication Studies at University of Vaasa

Communication Studies engages in research in communication as a multidimensional phenomenon. Communication Studies at the University of Vaasa explore communication in its many forms and contexts, and focus especially on digital media. We combine three intertwining approaches to communication: digital media, communication in organizations and technical communication.

The research topics include digital media in all it forms (e.g. online discussions and communities, chats, video games, virtual work); communication in organizations (e.g. strategic, investor, leadership communication); professional and technical communication (e.g. concept analysis,  user-oriented technical communication, usability and user experience of information systems); and media discourse.

From the beginning of the year 2018 we will be a part of the School of Marketing and Communication.

We have an Bachelor's Programme of Communication Studies (tuition in Finnish), two graduate programs (tuition in Finnish) - a multidisciplinary Master’s Degree in Communication (VIMA) and an interdisciplinary Master’s Degree in Technical Communication (TEVI). In the VIMA programme, students may choose to specialize in communication in organizations or in digital media. The TEVI programme has an emphasis in HCI and usability of information systems, and continues the two decade long co-operation with the Department of Computer Science. The programme also includes online studies in Terminology Science.

The PhD Studies in Communication are part of the Doctoral Programme of Social Sciences.
