Department of Communication Studies

Welcome to the Department of Communication Studies at University of Vaasa

The Department of Communication Studies engages in research in communication as a multidimensional phenomenon. We explore communication in its many forms and contexts and focus especially on professional communication and digital media. We believe in the decisive role of language in the communication. The research topics include online discussions and chats, blogging, video games, media discourse, language politics in organizational settings, communication in organizations, concept analysis methods, and user-oriented technical communication, etc.

The department offers studies leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees with emphases in professional communication, applied linguistics, digital communication and media studies. The Bachelor’s Degree (VINE) is a collaboration with the Departments of English and Modern Finnish. The special feature of this programme is that all the students share a part of their studies before specializing in their own major.

We have two graduate programs (tuition in Finnish) - a multidisciplinary Master’s Degree in Communication (VIMA) and an interdisciplinary Master’s Degree in Technical Communication (TEVI).

In the VIMA programme, which is organized together with the Department of Modern Finnish, communication students may choose to specialize in communication in organizations or in digital communication. The TEVI programme continues our nearly two decade long co-operation with the Department of Computer Science. The TEVI programme includes also an orientation in terminology science for those who have studied one or more languages for their bachelor degree.

A selection of courses in communication studies is also offered as online courses at the Open University.
