Self-initiated expatriation does not always enhance perceived employability of an employee and may appear as a risk for the employers according to a doctoral dissertation of Paula Makkonen.

Self-initiated expatriation has traditionally been connected to perceptions of high employability and career satisfaction. Self-initiated expatriates have also felt to increase the local talent pool available for staffing.
